Jesus Coached Even After...

We talked about the Emmaus Road experience this week at our church, and last week when we were preparing I saw Jesus coaching – again – even after the resurrection.

Read with me and pay special attention to where Jesus asked questions when He could have just revealed taught directly through teaching. (Watch where I highlight in bold and italicized font.)

Luke 14:13-27

That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. But God kept them from recognizing him.

He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?” (Did Jesus really not know? I think He offered them a moment of awareness as He asked.)

The truth is ALL coaches need to be attractive!

"Attractive", at its core, includes the concept of drawing toward or wanting to be near.

We probably all know someone who is gorgeous on the outside but is not someone we really want to spend time with. On the other hand, there are people in our lives that make us feel valuable, loved, and interesting. We want to spend time with them. We are attracted to them.

Who is like that for you?  You know what I mean? You are "attracted" to them because they care about you. They ask you questions about your life, your interests, your thoughts, your nexts...

My brother-in-law, Mark, comes to mind for me. He is a successful businessman and could spend his time talking about himself or recent accomplishments, but for as long as I have known him he has always made the conversation be about the other person. He seems truly intrigued by how others think and live. (That's probably at least one key to his success.)

“How will you know?”

It’s probably my favorite coaching question out there.

"How will you know (what ___)," "how will you know (when ___)," "how will you know (how ___)."

When prompted by the Holy Spirit to ask that powerful question, it unlocks a potential path forward for the person sitting across from you. 

Instead of listening to advice or guidance from a "coach," the "how will you know" question puts the ball completely in their corner. 

So, how will you know when it’s time to sign up for coaching certification?

Or how will you know when it’s time to ask someone you lead if they’re ready to sign up for coaching certification?

It’s not easy changing a personal paradigm, and almost everyone needs to make major adjustments.

It’s costly, not just monetarily, but it will take time and effort. It’s intense.

To be honest, it’s humbling.

It’s one thing to affirm the concept in theory and another to put its values into regular practice.

BUT IT IS TOTALLY WORTH IT!

Coaching changed my life AND it has changed the people around me.

Here are some ways I have seen it actually accomplish end goals that would never have happened if I had not taken coach training.

  * Marriage: One of the best surprises in my coach training was how it affected my marriage. I didn’t see that coming as I simply intended to use coaching in ministry, but what a wonderful asset it is to be able to love my husband more by listening well, believing in him, and hearing how the Holy Spirit is...

“So, what do you do?”

A simple question asked of the woman sitting beside me at a wedding rehearsal over five years ago.

A simple question that launched me into the next thing God was calling me to in my coaching journey.

I am the bride’s childhood best friend. She, the groom’s sister-in-law. Now we journey together in this world of coaching… believing in the serendipity, or “God-incidence,” of that day… embracing the joy of walking alongside others as they seek change, growth, and transformation.

God continues to unfold my coaching journey one step at a time.

That moment five years ago introduced me to Cindy Scott and led me to Bridges Coaching. I began with the Destiny by Design course, and simply kept saying, “yes” to each next thing… Coaching Training, Accelerated Coach Training, being a peer pair facilitating coach, the NXL Advanced Coach Training, and various coaching opportunities along the way.

Coach Training isn’t for everyone.

There are some specific people groups who would not really benefit.

1. Those who are all set!

If you are knocking it out of the park in your personal and professional relationships and have nowhere to grow, coach training is not likely to benefit you.

2. Those who prefer solely to teach!

While there’s a place for teaching in the kingdom of God, in the continuum of growth, it is only at the beginning.

In Bridges Coaching we promote the leadership growth model of:
Telling > Teaching > Training > Trusting 

If you are not able to encourage maturity and help the people in your life to grow in their own relationships with the Holy Spirit, then coach training is probably not for you.

3. Those who enjoy being needed!

It’s the classic, but on steroids! You can give a man a fish or teach him how to fish.

In coaching it sounds like this: You can give a man the answers, or you can help him learn to discern for himself.

If I’m honest, I totally didn’t get it.

I mean, I really didn’t get it.

I was way too busy to prioritize this right now. My leadership skills were fine for the time being. The Holy Spirit will lead me to say what I should say. This was like, thing No. 5 on my priority list. It’s just going to need to wait. Too busy.

Then I got it. And boy, oh boy, was I wrong.

That’s a serious sentence that I just wrote. I understand that sentence carries a lot of weight. And I completely stand by what I wrote.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that the coaching paradigm allowed me to be a better husband, a better dad, and a better church leader.

As a husband and dad, I considered myself a pretty good listener, but what I learned in coaching, was I could be an even better husband by being an active listener by truly being invested and asking questions. A true...
