Is The Scale The Answer?

What your scale tells you is just data. It gives you a fact - the honest truth about your weight.

The scale can be your friend if it tells you something you like, or your enemy if it doesn't. But the truth is the scale is just a tool to help you see what really is.

For me the scale is motivation!

If I like what I see it is motivation to keep up the good work, and if I don't like what I see it is a reminder that true change will take intentionality.

That's the bottom line really.

Change rarely happens by accident. It's hardly ever a surprise.

If I don't like what I see I have two options, well three maybe.

1) I can choose to do something about what I see.

This will include making a plan for an alternative outcome. It will likely include some trial and error, some intentionality and grit, and will probably require a realistic look at a reasonable timeline for effecting change.

2) I can avoid seeing and just not weigh myself anymore.

This plan will avoid acknowledgment of anything negative. It's kind of a stick-your-head-in-the-sand approach. LIkely nothing will change, but at least I don't have to think about it. Out of sight out of mind.

3) I can keep weighing myself but keep putting off doing anything about it.

I can blame my age or my hormones. I can be truly and deeply mystified that my weight is not changing with all the effort I am putting into it, but chalk it up to the fact that clearly I am an anomaly.

It's not just scales and weight that fall into this habit pattern.

How about these other measurements and practices?

  • Your retirement fund and your savings plan.
  • The project you want to accomplish and your action plan.
  • The relationship you are concerned about and the healthy effort you are putting into it.
  • The length of your to-do list and managing your schedule.
  • Your credit card debt and your payment plans.

Proverbs 4:11 says,

"I am guiding you in the way of wisdom, and I am leading you on the right path."

Are you listening for God's guidance? Are you following His leading?

What tools are you using to help you move toward the goals God has for you?

The scale is not the answer, the scale just lets you know how the journey is going.
