Two circles: one split into black and white halves, and one with black edges and a wide white middle

Right or wrong. In or out. Always or never.

What if neither is the answer?

Most of us were handed a simple map for the life of faith. It’s tidy. It’s also the reason so many of us feel disconnected. When we decide something is all bad, we swing hard toward its opposite. It feels right. What if it’s just the other side of a pendulum?

This book offers another way: a wide middle where two healthy perspectives can stand side by side, and an ongoing conversation with God about where you belong in this situation, this relationship, this season.

The Pendulum Process

1

Define the extremes

Name what “too far” looks like on your side and on the other side. Always and never are usually the giveaway.

2

Discuss both sides

Inside the edges are two healthy but differing perspectives. Learn to honor the one that isn’t yours.

3

Discern where God has you now

The middle is fluid, not fixed. Ask God where you belong for this season, and ask again next season.

What’s inside

Every pendulum has two edges no one wants to go over, and a wide middle where two healthy perspectives live. Here are a few of the edges. You’ll find the middles in the book.

Who it’s for

You personally

Ever wondered why others aren't as passionate about something you see clearly as black and white? This book will help you define the extremes and see that there may be more happening than you realize.

Small groups

Every chapter ends with questions to talk through, ideal for friends who don't all see things the same way. Building pendulums together, on everything from politics to cultural norms, can bring the unity our world desperately needs.

Coaches and leaders

A simple tool for conversations where two valuable perspectives are in tension. Whether it's two people or a whole team, it gives everyone a way to define the extremes, discuss both sides and discern what God has for this moment.

“If there were just a set of rules, we wouldn’t need to talk to Him.”
